The Tony Shafrazi Gallery is pleased to announce the inaugural solo exhibition of "Jason Bereswill, In House - In Process"
Jason Bereswill began this project two years ago by making small painting studies on various parts of the island of St. Barth’s; visiting the same sites many times in varying light, growing familiar with every aspect of their topography at different times of the day. In creating these painting studies, as well as making photographic studies of the same landscapes, Bereswill began building physical and digital records of his explorations on the island, which were then emailed back and forth between St. Barth’s and New York City as part of an ongoing correspondence. The immediacy of technological communication and image sharing informed the foundation of Bereswill’s new, large-scale paintings. In printing his digitized images onto the first layer of his canvases, he creates a scaffolding onto which the painting is then built, using the small studies made on site as reference for impressions and notations of particular details of light, color, and hue. Static, digitally rendered imagery gives way to active, freshly-painted brushstrokes; juxtaposing the enlarged pixilation of a photograph with both seamlessly painted surface and bravura.
For the duration of the exhibition, Jason Bereswill will use the gallery as his work space, effectively bringing his daily studio practice of “live” painting into the gallery. Exploring the performative aspects of painting challenges notions of predictability and blurs the line between studio and gallery, encouraging the viewer to participate and witness the ongoing development of Bereswill’s canvases as they are “built up” in real time.
